Dad's Precious

About a week or 2 ago, dad was coming back from a golf game in some far away place and it was raining heavily. He hit a pothole that was right smack in the middle of the road and burst (BURST, not punctured) his tyre. Heck, he claims he wasn't speeding, but how on earth do you burst a tyre without speeding by just going over a pothole? His tyre literally became little shreds of rubber.

Dad had to have his poor precious car towed, and on top of that, they couldn't tow it from the back as usual because his front wheel was out. To make things worse, remember, it was raining too.

Eventually AAM did the work and dad tipped them a few 100 under the pretence that it was raining, and because they took so much time and put in so much effort (i still think it's too much of a tip though).

Dad sent the car in to get it repaired. Perhaps this was all meant to be, because while repairing the mechanics found that his car's was spoilt. Anyways, dad was really happy today, cuz the thinga-ma-jig that got spoilt finally came in from Germany today so he should be able to get his dear precious back soon :)

Men love cars. Women love furniture. That's just how the world works.

Sleep

I got my English essay paper back today. So I reckoned: What better way to update my blog than by typing in things that I have already written and hence do not need to put in further thinking effort? :)

The topic for directed writing was “Ways to Promote Tourism” and we were meant to write it in the format of a speech. Directed writing is boring so here’s just the opening:

“A good product needs a good salesman,

But a good salesman does not need a good product.”

A very good morning I bid to the respected chairman, esteemed judges, accurate timekeeper, fellow contestants and last but not least, members of the floor. The topic I have chosen for my speech today is “Ways to Promote Tourism.”

Ladies and gentlemen,

As my opening quote states, “A good product needs a good salesman, but a good salesman does not need a good product”. It does not matter if you have El Dorado in your backyard or Shangri-la over the mountains, if you do not promote it, you might as well own the Gobi Desert. We, Malaysians, however are lucky. God has been so kind as to provide us with sun all year round as well as fauna and flora unique to our region. It is not a question of selling ice to an Eskimo, the question that should be asked is- “How do we promote it?”

Here’s my continuous writing, we started the exam late and I took a bit too long on my first essay, thus I chose a factual essay so that I would finish in time. Is it not sad that creativity is hampered in exams?

Question 2(a): My Favourite Pastime

Sleep

I am a strong believer that time is of the essence.

When I am home and I have completed my homework, or when I am in school and it’s in between lessons (or it’s just History class), I conduct the most beneficial activity possible that also happens to be my favourite pastime:

I sleep.

In this society of somnorexics, my favourite pastime has been given a bad name. Somehow, this totally natural activity has assumed a negative form in the minds of today’s average Joe.

“Sleep,” he says, “is simply a waste of time. Think about all the time things you could get done if there was no need to sleep!”

Staunch on his point, the average Joe starts churning out facts he probably read in some recent daily.

“We spend one-third of our lives sleeping Warren, ONE-THIRD! If you compare that figure to, I don’t know, let’s say the population of China, that would be like……
3,333,333,333 PEOPLE!

I do not see the connection between the population of China and sleep, and similarly I do not see the connection between sleep and wasting time. So allow me now, if you may, to explain to you why my favourite pastime is in fact beneficial.

What happens when we sleep? Well sleep is a natural process embedded into our inner-workings since the day God made Adam and Eve. When we sleep, our brain and body is given a rest. Through the hectic affairs of each day, our energy ration has been drained and our mind needs time to relax and recharge. Our body uses this time to focus on repairing injuries or cuts, regenerating skin that has flaked off throughout the day as well as allowing our joints to settle in place.

For me, as a teenager, sleep is crucial. As I have not fully developed, I need a minimum of 8 hours of sleep a day. During sleep, between the hours of 11pm and 2am, the body releases important growth hormones to allow proper development (no wonder I’m taller than average!).

With the oncoming SPM examinations, sleep is even more important than usual. The deepest stage of sleep is called REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and scientists believe this is the time our mind rearranges memories and thoughts throughout the day. A conclusive study done by NewScientist magazine showed that students with sufficient sleep had a higher probability to successfully memorize facts when tested.

Along with the numerous health benefits, sleeping is my favourtie pastime as it provides me with dreams. I think dreams are one of the many things in life that we would enjoy. Through dreams I have experienced many things I cannot imagine possible here in reality. I have darted through the Milky Way and gone spelunking in megalithic caverns all at the expense of a little time.

So the next time you see me sleeping, do not bother giving me your mumbo-jumbo facts and figures. Sleep is my favourite pastime and it keeps me bright and sunny every day when I am awake. In fact, the next time you see a drool waterfall cascading down my desk, come along, and join me, we shall enjoy my favourite pastime together!

Note: I have never read an issue of NewScientist in my life, I do not know what actually happens during the time we sleep. Basically all my facts are BS. But you see, a good salesman doesn’t need a good product :P

MPH Essay

I wrote this last night at 9pm and slept at 1.30am, the deadline for the MPH essay competition is today so it seems fitting to have only done this just the night before :)

Malaysian timing "lah"!

FOREWORD

"Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT'S relativity." – Albert Einstein

What really is time? What is considered an eternity and what is considered a brief moment? If a newborn baby could speak he could say he has been crying his entire life and it would be true.

We consider a second to be a mere passing moment, but to a raindrop a second is its entire lifetime. I have written this essay through the persona of a Raindrop to illustrate this aspect of time that a few seconds can seem like an eternity whilst years can fly by like seconds.

To the reader of this essay I wish that you read this essay with depth so as to understand the symbolism I have used to embed the philosophies I wish to present in this essay. I do hope that you enjoy reading this essay as much as I have enjoyed writing it.

Sincerely,
Warren Chan

The Fable of the Raindrop

The following takes place in the timeframe of 3 human seconds, which is the equivalent of 126 years for a raindrop:

The first few years of my life have never been very clear to me. Whenever I try to recall it I find no sight, no sound, no scent, no taste, and the only thing I do find is a feeling. But even the feeling is not something very solid to me - it is abstract, and often I have difficulties recalling it.

According to the Stork however, it is better this way - to not know my past. From my conversations with him through the 32 years that we had spent together he has enlightened me on that subject, as he had witnessed my birth and was familiar with many others such like myself.

“Good day,” I said.
“Greetings, a pleasure to meet you, I am the Stork. Do you have a name my little friend?”

I tried to recall my name but drew a blank. The Stork -Old and Wise- recognized my confused expression and comforted me.

“Not to worry young lad, a name is not important. Do you recall your past?”
“No I do not.”
“Ah, I am not surprised. But it is a good thing you do not know your past. I have watched you since birth and your past is filled with sadness. And for the sake of your happiness I shall keep it a secret from you”
“I understand your concern dear Stork - Old and Wise, but no matter how sad it may be it is my right to know for it is my past and even if it is sad I shall accept it for it is not our past which determines us but instead it is what we do in our future that makes us who we are.”

The Stork chuckled at my reply and I did not understand why for I was speaking in a very serious tone.

“Aha, you are right little one, it would be wrong for the Old and Wise to withhold knowledge from the Young.”

He drew a deep breath.

“Your mother little one, cared for you dearly and held you her entire life. Alas,
she died with your birth.”
“It is true that this information has hurt me Stork – Old and Wise – however it would have hurt me more not to know. The important thing is that although it was brief, I was loved, and to be loved (regardless how brief) is all that matters.”

As our conversation drew on I realized that it was hard for the Stork – Old and Wise – to keep up with my pace. It is hard for the Old to keep up with the Young. So I decided that it would be best that I leave.

“I am sorry Stork – Old and Wise - but I must leave you now.”
“I understand my child.”
“However, I wish I had a name so that you could remember me by.”
“Oh do not bother dear child. What is there in a name? People these days have become so preoccupied with names that they spend money just to add a prefix to their name. There is nothing of great worth in a name dear child. I shall not remember you according to your title or the façade you present to me; I shall remember you by the time I have spent with you and the actions you have committed. For me dear child, that shall be your name.”

***

With that I said goodbye to the Stork – Old and Wise – and continued with my journey for several decades until I collided with another individual, whom to my surprise was much smaller than I.

“Hello,” I greeted this new companion of mine, “Who are you?”
“Hello, I am Sulphur and I shall be your companion for life.”
“For life? Why do you wish to join me on my journey?”
“I have joined you because I wish to use you. We are of the same destination but of different goals. You wish to enrich the Earth however I wish to destroy it.”
“Why do you wish to destroy the Earth? It has done you no harm.”
“That is true, but I cannot avoid my future. I have been created so and therefore I must do what I have been created to do. It is not the Snake’s choice to kill and it is not the Mosquito’s choice to suck blood. There are created to do so, and therefore they must do what they have been created to do.”
“Then it cannot be avoided. You are my companion and I shall accept you for who you are and hope for nothing more and nothing less.”
“Thank you for your understanding my dear companion, but do not worry. I shall bring you no harm. However, because of me you will be looked on differently by Man. For where there once saw you as a blessing they shall now see you as a curse.”
“Why shall they see me as a curse?”
“Because you have now become an acid and you shall bring damage to the crops they adore, corrode the sculptures they built and bring death to the food they would otherwise eat.”
“But it is not my fault that I have collided with you.”
“Yes, that is true. It is man who has created me through money and greed and it is truly their own evil and misdeeds that shall bring them pain.”
“So why is it that Man has blamed me and not themselves?”
“Because Man refuses to admit their own mistakes, and it is so.”

So from then on my life was spent with my new companion and I accepted him for who he was because he had been created so and I could hope for nothing more and nothing less.

***

Through my journey over the many years, I have come across many magnificent sights and experienced many different things. However, it is the Sun who once granted me with the best experience and the best sight. It was when he shined his radiance upon me that another individual appeared: the Rainbow.

“Do you enjoy my presence?” the Rainbow said.
“Yes I do, I find you very attractive.”

The Rainbow spoke to me for years and years, but never did the subject ever change to anything other than herself. Until one day.

“Do you enjoy my presence?”
“Yes I did. You have graced my days with wonderful colour.”
“Do you not find me pretty?”
“Yes I did. Your beauty left me in awe, however I have found that that is all there is. You are adorned with beauty but with nothing deeper, nothing more.”
“Please say you admire me. I wish to be admired.”
“Why do you wish to be admired?”
“Because being admired makes me happy.”
“What is there in admiration to make you so happy?”
“I do not know. I am Vanity – I am the result of the glory and popularity given to you by the Sun. I am nothing deeper, nothing more.”
“You are right, you are my Vanity. Whilst you have brought me joy and laughter you are but frivolous and ephemeral. You are nothing deeper, nothing more.”

It is then that the Sun stopped providing me with his warmth and the Rainbow disappeared.

***

It is during the last minutes of my life that I met the individual I journeyed long and far to meet.

“I have been waiting for you.” She said to me.
“And so have I, my love.”
“How has your journey been?”
“I have seen many great things and met many interesting individuals. However, through my journey I have become tainted.”
“Yes, my love, I can see that in you. You are no longer the innocent soul you once were - you have killed your Mockingbird. Your innocence and purity is lost.”
“I am sorry my love, it is true. I have sinned. Upon my contact with your majesty I shall grant you with pain and not pleasure.”
“Do not worry my dear I forgive you and I shall bear your sins so you shall not suffer. I love you and shall accept you regardless of the form and shape in which you return yourself to me.”

And it is here that my journey ended.

For you, my journey had been a brief passing moment of no serious consequence. But you see, it may have had only been 3 seconds to you, but it was an entire lifetime to me.

“I have fallen for you my entire life” said the Raindrop as he kissed the Earth.

Just Peachy

Today, the results for the Treasure Hunt were announced.
Note: I didn't brush my teeth this morning. This is my conversation with mum when i came back from school:
Hence, having been the first team to finish the treasure hunt on Saturday, we (chit, jeff....) all waited anxiously to hear our names announced for 3rd, 2nd or perhaps even 1st place for the treasure hunt.
Me: Mum
By the time Mr. William finished announcing the Consolation Prize winners, our group had already been called.
Mum: Yea?
So who won? Group 14, the group we were neck-to-neck with the entire treasure hunt final until the last challenge where we finished first and then let them copy our answers (cuz we had won and it wouldn't matter anymore...right?).
Me: You had sex last night didn't you?
Well it turns out that we were missing 2 clues in our bag that we handed up, i don't know where it had dropped out. Upon hearing such news from the head facilitator Elaine Fernandez (i'm just putting her name down cuz i think it's cool) the 3 letters "W-T-F" seemed to be the only things that ran through my mind for a good 1 minute.
Mum: Umm yea.
O well, i guess that's life- you win some, you lose some- (although i'm not sure what we've "won" yet).
Me: Next time you do that could you make sure you unlock your bedroom door in the morning so i can use the toilet?
So here's my personal congrats to Group 14 - Zhuan Zhuan, the-girl-who-hangs-out-with-michelle-yap-and-does-taekwando, the-girl-who-hangs-out-with-the-other-girl and that-other-girl. I'm sorry, i suck at names (especially with chinese ones), but i remember your faces! Sincerely, CONGRATS :D
Mum: Ok.
i use my parent's bedroom toilet because to use the other toilet i have to walk past this 17 feet window which overlooks the road. My tootbrush and toothpaste are in my parent's bathroom.

Of Clues & Jubilees

On this night of all nights, i'm starting my post mundane:

Today, Catholic High School celebrated its 50th Anniversary or as they so wonderfully called it:

Catholic High School's Golden Jubilee

Despite the large font i've put that phrase in, i can't say my heart is beating with equal enthusiasm.

Nonetheless, when the time comes and i get talk to my junior ed-boarders, i'll post a whole gallery pictures for you to view this joyous occasion. (Although judging by my previous picture-posting endeavours, i'd recommend you not to count on it.)

I would really like to use a an artillery of flowery words and elaborative phrases to illustrate the Jubilee.

However, I am lazy.

Such energy has somehow eluded me in the wake of today's events. So as this blog is supposed to be most importantly a so-called "diary" for myself, i shall say it in the most common and mediocre straightforward primary-1 style writing i know:

We (Chit, Jeff, Josh and I) was the 1st group to finish for the Treasure Hunt. Rejoice.

P.S. I've decided that from now on, I shall refer to bimbo blogs as bimblogs.

On another note, Dad's watching Sin City again upon my suggestion. I was watching it with him, til the DVD started acting up. Funny thing is, before we lent it to a "friend" of ours it was a perfect copy. Upon closer inspection i have deduced that our "friend" has kept our wonderful version and returned us a cheap dud.

Snippet 6 - Sidebar

I realize that if you view this blog with Internet Explorer my sidebar appears all the way at the bottom of the screen.

Well too bad.

Not that i don't want to change it, it's just that i don't know how to change it. So i am sorry but i would recommend that you download Mozilla Firefox not because you would be able to view my blog properly but mainly because it is just so much more better - less ads, less viruses, less bugs and etc.

Upgrade to Firefox 1.5!

Family Dinner

I missed Assunta's Lit Night with the excuse that I have Chinese tuition on Friday nights.

Third Floor Restaurant, Shangri-la KL

Dessert menu, the warm chocolate cake is MAGNIFIQUE, seriously.

Yet this week I skipped class anyway because Dad had this sudden urge to have a family dinner considering my sis has been away for 2 months and now she's going to Japan for 2 weeks.

Lemon Garden, Shangri-la KL

Yep, this is a Chocolate Fountain

My sis is a graduate bum, who is meant to spend this year recouperating from her psoriasis problem.

Lafite, Shangri-la KL

It was like a Kinder Bueno cake. I love Kinder Bueno.

I was really quite excited about this whole family dinner thing.

Lafite, Shangri-la KL

Cheese Menu that comes right up to the table.

I was looking forward to some sort of poncy restaurant in the Shangri-la or at least some nice restaurant in KL.

Shanghai (restaurant), JWW Marriot, Starhill, KL

Dim Sum

However in the end we went to a not-so-poncy restaurant. We ended up in Crystal Crown's Chef Rasa Sayang.

Chef Rasa Sayang, Crystal Crown PJ

I actually do not like Chef Rasa Sayang, mainly because they sell Sharksfin.

Chef Rasa Sayang, Crystal Crown PJ

Giant shark's fin

Yes, I do not deny that I was once a shark's fin-lover. However, after seeing videos of how shark's fins are harvested and seeing figures of their dwindling population, I now realise the inhumane cruelty dealt by man towards this poor creature.

The often perceived man-eater is in fact none other than man-eaten.

Besides, how could i deny Sun Yan Zi? :p

Nonetheless, I was just happy to be out together with my family because we really rarely do eat out - we're lazy people.

Dinner was quaint, Dad (as usual) talked about business, Mum talked about golf whereas Sis talked about her idea of setting up a business (damn, I think one day in the future all our dinners will be like CEO meetings). Sadly, our dinner could have been much better.

Crystal Crown's Chef Rasa Sayang was not always the way it seems now. A long time ago, we would have been considered incredibly lucky to have gotten a table without reservations. Today however, the once popular restaurant was merely a little less than a quarter full. Seeing its current condition, its once famed popularity now seemed to me like an echo from the past.

To start things off, service was terrible. Despite its lack of clients and its abundance of scuttling waiters, dishes came to us at a snail's pace. In fact, at one stage we had waited so long that mum was asking for the bill when just in the nick of time our next dish was served.

It actually saddens me to see a restaurant ripped from its former glory. But i guess as history has shown us, empires never last.

Music in Time

Well so exams are over and as promised, this is a post:

I was sorting out my iTunes library today and i think it is interesting how my taste in music has changed over the years. So I went on a little "scavenger hunt" and found all the albums that i have ever bought...well most of them at least.

***

Note all the "TULEN" stickers.
Support the music scene, buy the original
(as if they don't get enough money already).

***

1. The first album i ever bought was Swing When You're Winning by Robbie Williams. During my "scavenger hunt" I could not find it though because my sis left it in New Zealand. I love this album and still listen to it.

So what? I'm old school :P

taken from Amazon.com

2. A few years later, when i went through my music-is-my-life stage i was listening to all sorts of mainstream crap and one of my favourite (out of the crap) was Linkin Park.

It started off with Reanimation...

...then the whole shebang.

I got over Linkin Park ages ago, and i don't have the slightest intent to buy Fort Minor.

3. Black Eyed Peas.
Elephunk is(was?) a good album.

However, Monkey Business...not that great.

4. You know, you just can't beat THE King

5. Speakerboxxx/The Love Below by Outkast
Well this album is pretty good. However the Malaysian Censorship Board sucks.
They even censored words like "gun", "prostitute", "breasts". Bah.

6. Then Ainaa introduced me to other music, such as Weezer. And my mainstream phase officially ended. Thank you Ainaa! :)

I got the Blue Album...

the Green Album...

...and of course Make Believe

I think Pinkerton is the best Weezer album. Sadly all shops were(still are?) out of stock, so i downloaded it....along with Maladroit.

***
Downloading is not stealing music,
I'm merely sharing music with my

friends

whom i have never ever seen or spoken to in my entire life.

***

7. Ainaa would send me a few songs that she thought were nice. Eventually, i ended up downloading more of their songs when i decided i liked them. ConsequentlyI would buy their albums if i could find them in shops....but sadly i couldn't find a single one, so i did the next best thing - download :D

Damien Rice

Stars

Death Cab for Cutie

Aqualung

AthleteInterpol

Note: The noir effect you get when you take a picture of a digital screen (e.g. TV or computer) is because of the fact that the digital screens are shooting out lightbeams at such a fast rate that it looks like a constant image, when in fact it is actually constantly changing. Since a camera has a..........bah i'm too lazy to explain.

8. After listening to "Glamorous Indie Rock & Roll" as well as "Midnight Show" i bought

Hot Fuss

The Killers rock!

9. Gorillaz is cool with their interesting mix of music - a bit of blues, pop, rock, rap, techno and gospels. Now that's skill.

Demon Days

So that's all pretty much where i am now number 6. onwards, and what i do realize is that very few people share quite the same taste of music as me aside from Ainaa of course, and now i've met a chic called Amira who shares the same taste as well.

Are you an Indie (its a genre, not a race) lover too?
