A couple of weeks ago I read an article on malaysiakini stating that Badawi planned to cancel some government projects in light of the global economic slowdown. If that was not bad enough, I just read an article on msn news today regarding Anwar's proposed budget which also suggests slashing major government projects.

To all those who have some background in economics-
Isn't the government supposed to increase government spending in an economic slowdown?
Or are the billion dollar bailouts proposed by the Fed, EU central bank, RBA and numerous others in their respective countries all wrong? Yea, that must be it, all those developed nations are wrong, Malaysia's right!

HEALTH RISKS

Numerous studies have shown that extended use of hookah over many sessions can be as detrimental to a person's health as smoking cigarettes. ^[15]^[16]^[17]. Each hookah session typically lasts from 20 - 80 minutes and consists of 50 - 200 puffs which range from 0.15 - 1 litre per puff ^[18]. This exposes the hookah smoker to considerably more smoke over a longer time period compared with a cigarette which ranges from 0.5 - 0.6 liters per cigarette^[19].

While the water absorbs some of the nicotine in the tobacco smoke, the smoker can be exposed to enough nicotine to cause addiction ^[20] ^[21]. Furthermore, the water moisture induced by the hookah makes the smoke less irritating and may give a false sense of security and reduce concerns about true health effects ^[22].

Other research shows that a 45 minute session of hookah tobacco smoking (tobacco molasses) delivers slightly more tar and carbon monoxide (around 5-10%) than a pack of cigarettes.^[23] This study has, however, come under criticism for using unrealistically high temperatures for the tobacco (600-650 degrees C) and using arbitrary figures for tar filtration rates.^{[citation needed]} This could possibly have skewed results, as the carcinogenic and toxin levels of smoke increases dramatically with temperature (Wynder 1958). Common practice is to keep temperatures to degrees which do not "char" the hookah; that is within a temperature range of 100-150 C. (Chaouachi K: Patologie associate all'uso del narghile). The effects of these lower temperatures on tar are inconclusive, though Chaouachi indicates the tar would be less harmful.

Some hookah tobaccos claim to contain 0.0% Tar, but this is misleading because tar is made when tobacco burns. However, when smoking a hookah the tobacco is heated rather than burned. More research is needed to determine the exact amount of tar produced in a session before the burning of the tobacco.

The level of impact on a smoker's health is linked to the set-up and components of the hookah as well. A hookah only utilizing the basic components listed above is believe to have much harsher health consequences than one set-up properly and with various safety devices installed: Since the tobacco in a hookah is roasted as opposed to burned, the density and temperature of the tobacco is paramount to ensure a safer quality of smoke^{[citation needed]}. Distancing somewhat the coal from the tobacco and placing a perforated thermal cover (not to be confused with a wind cover) over the bowl will reduce tar output. Using a Heba diffuser around the down stem in the water basin may provide a slightly greater amount of filtration, however a properly conducted study is needed to validate these claims. The use of a nicotine filter at some stage of the smoke cycle, preferably in the hose, may reduce health risks, but once again a properly conducted study is needed to validate these claims.

Hookahs can also be smoked with tobacco-free flavours. These contain Sugar Cane Bagasse with no tobacco, nicotine or tar. This new method of smoking is aimed at replacing tobacco and eliminates its negative health effects. There have been few studies to show the impact of smoking herbal flavours in Shisha pipes.^{[citation needed]}^[24]

Many articles^[25] suggest that there is a "huge bulk of evidence" to determine the effects of hookah smoking. Research is under way by Fogarty International Centre-funded Syrian Centre for Tobacco Studies, Egyptian Smoking Prevention Research Institute, Research for International Tobacco Control-funded Tobacco Prevention and Control Research Group at the American University of Beirut, Lebanon.

As the above mentioned are all US-sponsored and financed institutions, it would be good for balance to also mention the existence of other peer-reviewed ground-breaking research led in other parts of the world, namely Europe and Asia ^[26]. Most recently, the first aetiological study on Hookah Smoking and Cancer^[27] ever carried out was published in the Harm Reduction Journal.

As with all other tobacco and smoke products, using hookahs with open canker sores or wounds in the mouth can greatly increase the chances of gum infection, gingivitis, or in rare cases, gum cancer.

And in the presence of this higher being,
the weakness of my masculinity kicks in,
causing me to personify my wannabe big-baller, shot-caller,
God’s gift to the female species with shiny suit wrapping rapping like,

Now, this girl was no fool.
She gives me a dirty look with the quickness like,

and her gaze grabs you by the throat.

If you all don't know what stop-motion pictures are, they're basically movies which are created by taking hundreds of photos just to create little movement. Just think: *snap*, *move object*, *snap*, *move object*, repeat about a hundred times more. Examples of movies done this way are such as, Corpse Bride, Nightmare Before Christmas and Bob the Builder (btw, my dad's name is Bob). Anyway, my dear ol' buddy ol' pal Weiyan is evidently very free in his holidays now and has created these two videos. I think they're great. He's talented.

"Nick Naylor doesn't hide the truth...he filters it."

Thank You For Smoking is a movie I watched sometime earlier this year, but have since watched it about twice more. If i ever did keep a list of Top 10 Greatest Movies Warren Has Ever Watched, this movie would probably fit somewhere in between of Lucky Number Slevin and Basic.

But enough dabbling and onto the movie.

The movie revolves around Nick Naylor, vice-president of the Academy of Tobacco Studies and lobbyist for all tobacco companies. For those of you who don't know what a lobbyist is, Mr. Nick is the guy who tells the public that tobacco ain't bad. He's the Sultan of Spin- he speaks and is good at it.

The movie starts off with a basic introduction to Nick's life. Most interstingly of which is his fellow lobbyist friends- the lobbyist for alcoholic beverages and the lobbyist for firearms- collectively known as the Merchants of Death.

The basic storyline is that there is a senator who is going against cigarettes and there is a reporter doing a story on him. He has to deal with both.

And as for the rest of the story it is generally riddled with business errands such as making cigarette movie deals and gagging the former Marlboro Man, each errand showing another aspect to his job of spinning the truth and never being wrong.

All in all though, I just enjoy this movie because of wit.

We fired our maid yesterday because we caught her with a handphone. My mum took the handphone and inside were all sorts of 'cinta/sayang' msges and calls. So we figured that she's prolly being lured and tricked by some Indon arse and one day he and his gang will break-in and rob us. To make matters worse, in the phone were pics of her with our clothing on. We actually would have let her stay on though, that is if she had not locked herself in her room and refused to do any work.

In any case, that was yesterday. I've been doing housework since then and one of my tasks today was to clean up her room, damn. For being the cleaner of the house her room was the dirtiest of them all. The floor was dusty and there was some sticky liquid stuff on the floor and it was like little black crap balls. I also found a food container with spoons (yea she steals our chocolates) and many other of my sister's accessories she had taken for herself.

But the worst of all.

Hidden under her bed-side tabletop cloth was a scanned IC of me that I had thrown away.

About a month ago I slipped a complaint form into the Taylor's suggestion box, and to my surprise I received a response when I checked my mail the very night I slipped in the complaint.
Perhaps M'sian customer service ain't that bad after all and Taylor's ain't as money-blood-sucking as I had thought. Although at some points i felt like I was being replied by a computer (especially when I was told "Thanks again for your patient.").

Thanks for the prompt reply.

No I am not referring to any classroom in specific. For the old classrooms, I currently have classes in 2.2, 2.5, 2.6 and 2.8. I find those classes in general to be hot, mostly during the afternoon periods. In the morning the classrooms are cool enough for study.

So as for now, the conclusion is that 2.2, 2.5, 2.6 and 2.8 are hot during the afternoon periods.

However, now that you have further enquired, I will note which of the classes are specifically hot and at what periods. I shall try my best to reply you by next Wednesday (16/5) as I will start taking note from tomorrow.

On another note, I would like to say that I have so far never felt discomfort in terms of air-conditioning for my classes in the new block. Praise to Taylor's for that.

On the 26th of April, a Thursday morning, I lazily walked to my car for yet another day of college. But lo and behold, when I went to my driving seat i realised that there were glass shards on the seat. My eyes then bounced off the glass shards to notice that my entire radio had been (very barbarically, mind you) ripped out and my glove compartment was open and my SmartTag was gone. I then quickly rushed over to my front passengers seat window to face this sad sight.

This event happened right in front of my house the night before. Our garage doesn't have enough space for 4 cars, so as a result, my car the unlucky 4th, is left right outside.

I guess what's strange is that none of us heard the car alarm sound. The other pity of the whole event is that my car was parked on the left side of the house's front gate and thus the CCTV on the right didn't catch anything at all.

Fortunately, despite that they had opened the glove apartment and had obviously ruffled through its contents, they had not stolen anything else.

Unfortunately, the day of the event was the day I was leaving with Rotarian Pua to go for the Golden Child Project. The Golden Child Project is a yearly event sponsored and organised by the Rotary Club of PJ where approx 30 terminally ill children are taken to a holiday destination in Malaysia for 3 days and 2 nights, this time it was Genting.

On another note, there's this new cancer ad on Astro where there's a young kid walking around an empty stadium. Her name's Amiza and she was one of the terminally kids we brought to Genting. The toy Koala she is holding is from the Golden Child Project and it is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Surfers' Paradise. Everytime i see that ad now i feel slightly saddened since i know her personally, but at the same time i feel somewhat happy that i have helped her in some way through the project.

Imagine being 6 and knowing that you might never reach 7.
And here I am complaining about my stolen radio.

You know, I am not the type of person who sits down and suddenly thinks of writing a poem. I'm the type who writes a poem every once in a while when there is some sudden inspiration to it. And this doesn't necessarily mean an emotion, it can sometimes be events or objects. Take this poem for example, it is not inspired by love or anything close to it despite the fact that the last few lines clearly show that emotion. This poem was actually inspired when I was looking out my computer window at the wind blowing the durian tree. Thus, it is for this reason that my poems come out at irregular intervals, sometimes I produce maybe a poem every two weeks, or sometimes I produce one in three months. (Lately though i have produced quite a lot..must be the fact that hot afternoons make me daydream more :P) Cheers all =)

Stop Being Sensitive

As a reader of the daily paper, it has become increasingly obvious to me that the government has been building up a fondness towards a particular word. Frequent as keris-wavings and as highlighted as natural disasters, are articles urging and reminding us once again to “be sensitive”.

The government’s intentions are not hard to comprehend: they believe sensitivity will bring unity, understanding and peace. However, it is a well-known fact to the Malaysian walking on the street that although the government’s intentioned situations manifest themselves on the surface, beneath the sun-touched exterior there are hushed murmurs of race, religion and rights in the dark.

To properly address the problem of sensitivity, we first have to know what “sensitivity” means. Based on the government’s usage (and not the Oxford English Dictionary), “sensitive” roughly means “do not talk or question whatever we (the government) are addressing”. An example of this would be:

PM: BE SENSITIVE TOWARDS RACIAL ISSUES.

Since we now know what “sensitive” means, let us translate this message:

PM: DO NOT MENTION OR QUESTION RACIAL ISSUES.

Is it not obvious why Malaysia remains racially segregated after more than a century of inter-racial mixing? It is because the government does not really solve the people’s problems, but instead they hush it. When an individual knows that he could be attacked by a number of sensitivity tools ranging from an organization called JAKIM to a nifty Article 153, he starts to wonder whether it really is a good idea to open his mouth.

Alas, simply avoiding the topic in public is not enough to extinguish the flame in the unsatisfied citizen’s heart. The citizen’s restlessness is consequently communicated to his brethren who share his views. Communication methods may range from hushed talks amongst family to charismatic preachings coming from the mosque several blocks away, but regardless of the method of output the feeling is the same- neither Muthu, Malik nor Ma Li is totally at ease.

In the virtual realm of the popular online game, issues are often solved when flaming scepter meets sharpened axe. However, I like to believe that we Malaysians are more than troll, goblin and dwarf and can settle our daily problems in reality with a more civilized approach by replacing swords with words (and not both at the same time). So you ask: how are we going to bring such hushed issues out into the public? The answer fellow Malaysians is this- insensitivity.

Being sensitive merely escalates minor issues by adding strong emotion towards accusations that may or may not be true. If I am a slit-eye Chinese and someone calls me sepet, then hey, that is what I am and there is no reason for me to get angry and give him a hard stare (though he may not notice it through my narrow slits). Or if I am a kampong-Malay and someone calls me lazy, then why get upset if the statement is false? Overreacting would simply mean I accepted that his statement is true. Instead, the better response would be to work hard and beat him, proving his accusation wrong. And as clichéd as it may sound, “Nobody is perfect” so either accept your shortcomings or change them, but do not overreact.

Insensitivity is the way to go for Malaysia; it will allow our inner unrest to be released to the public and the public will respond in a civilized and compromising fashion. And hopefully one day, Muthu, Malik and Ma Li will laugh about how Muthu has a higher probability of getting run over at night, how Malik has a slightly more naked genital and how Ma Li can be blindfolded with dental-floss, whilst they yam seng their teh-ais at the nearby mamak shop.

This is an article I wrote for the Taylor's College Yearbook - Winanga-li. It was approved by edboard members as well as the edboard teacher. However, it was eventually rejected by college management. The reason? "The issue is too sensitive."

Classic. If you ever wondered what it was about, it's a song about the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (sejarah textbook anyone?), they shot his wife first. The whole song is in the voice of Mr. Ferdinand speaking to the assasin and asking the assasin to kill him because without his wife there is no reason to live.

Franz Ferdinand - Auf Achse (it means "on axel")
This song, to me refers to human nature and the death of Jesus Christ. The beginning part of the song has lots of lines like "you see her, you can't touch her", "you want her, you can't have her" "she's not so special, so look what you've done boy". Then afterwards they change tempo and have a few lines that starts with "Now i'm here nailed above you, blood gushing from my side, with your sins you have killed me, thinking of your sins i die...". Then the song switches back to the original tempo and it goes back to the lines "you see her" but there is no "you can't touch her" line. Make your own conclusion to what that means. I'm an agnostic theist.

Every Friday mum plays mahjong. This usually occurs at a friends house in Tropicana, but this time mum decided to be the host.

These women will play fooooreeevverr. A typical Friday starts off in the early morn with a game of golf. Then after a shower and makan, they adjourn to someone's abode for this ancient chinese game. I took these pictures (it's a combination of 3 photos) at 4pm, they had started playing at around 1pm.

and even now, as I write, they play.
